Verbier

the freeriding mekka?

Insert: 17.03.2014
For me it was probably for the first time that there was almost no snow in the Czech Republic during the whole winter. But for me the winter was just the opposite and I had many pleasant powder surprises. The first time I went for a freeride to the big mountains . I am writting my first article. And though this winter has been about for most of us a great disappointment, at least at Czech rep. and Slovakia, but I enjoyed it as much as I could.

This season should be for me and a buddy Johnny , one large beginning of a new life chapter and freeriding . Last year I was at the end of the season finally bought fat skis and then watching photos and videos on the internet incredibly excited to finish the test and will be able to start the season . Appointed action in Sportgastein was cancelled and we finally were lucky that we could add to our friends and go with them to Verbier / Nendaz .

Verbier , the only thing I heard about a week before I went therewas that it is a "mekka" of freeriding . I have not found a lot of maps and guides, found a little here on the Powderline forum and at least advised by Jirka Zelinka. Thanks for that. What we have seen on the map of resorts , it was huge , so we were looking forward to what will be a powder bomb that 's going to give a lot of things to ride .

With the arrival on Saturday in the center was dumping and dumping and we were looking forward to the next day for a hell a lot of powder . The next day , although we got a lot of pow , but I can could not see or step on and so have no idea what the ride . Moreover, it is very warm and the snow is pretty toughand we have decided to ride some safe terrains.

Other days are longer and the weather was getting much better, which was really nice. We had a chance to ride some decent things on Tuesday and Thursday , where both paths describe in the following paragraphs . This resort is huge so you really have to know it otherwise you spend more time on lifts than on skis . Then there is perhaps more off-piste skiers than skier on the slopes . So as I was advised by Jirka, at Verbier and Nendaz are most of the accessible terrains already done after two days of fresch tracks. There is plenty of faces and hundreds all around, but you need to hike and know the area well. Of course you have to have avalanche terrain skills, which we did not want to attempt. Last two days we enjoyed greatly and this brings me to Tuesday and Thursday.

Tuesday, the first nice day so we went right to the highest peak of Mt. Fort, where is also very nice panorama and the begining of a long marked freeride line . Freeride trip based on the marked freeride lines looks nice, but those are rather mogul slopes , where families take their children to experience the off-piste adrenaline . Certainly make sense , but just as soon as you have a big dump of snow . At the top of Mt. Fort can go to the southern wall called, The back side of Mt . Fort, where it is made for a few people and at their own risk . We were a bit nervous, but eventually we had kind of balls and joined to the crew of 4 Norwegians . Our line down to Siviez, to nearest lift, takes maybe two hours and you can ski the Mt . Fort in a several different ways . We believed the Norwegians and just went with them . The entire line was divided into several traverses and couloirs ( to move to another part of the mountain ) , which takes about most of the time. Anyway, it is very nice and worth it. On the way we met a group with guides, who went by another way, and then meet us at some valley. With hindsight, I think that we were pretty much fools , because we did not give proper spacing and we were riding in a group. But the entire face looked very safe and the conditions as well.

On Wednesday we took the classic skis (it was awful again ) and I had a little of downhill and carving..

Thursday, another beautiful day so we ran on the first morning lift and that we'll ride Mt . Fort. The cabin was unfortunately closed due to technical problems . We stayed at the station Col des Gentienes do not know what to do about the other group of 50 enthusiasts along with different kinds of guides . We give a very short ride to the T-lift called Gentianes . On the way to the T=lift we met a snowboarder with which we greeted . We had a word with him and it turned out that he works here every winter. He told us something about nice couloir which is is going to hike up. So we asked him if we could join . The journey took us about 2 hours without skinns. The first way through the couloir was made up by riders with guide. Once we got up, we had a wonderful view below us . However, we continued on a traverse to get the really steep face. The saddle is close to the summit of Mont-Gelé and the southern couloir which we are going to ski is called Colouir de la pointe Courbe , according to Chris , one of the most beautiful in Verbier . On top of the face we had a rest, tea and discussing with Chris about everywhere he went to ride. Why is another powder in BC and Verbier . The way down it's unbelievable , probably the best ride I've experienced . Very long couloir , which has for beginning around 40 degrees and a lot of rocks and extends to the end. Another lines we made alone, tired and full of experiences.

On Friday, we agreed with Chris , but weather was very bad again , so packed up our bags and went home. To Verbier and substantially all 4 Vallées sum up, this is a really great resort that has a large number of couloirs and nice places . But it is not a place for amateurs and beginners as we were and you need to make sure you know something about avalanche terrain . Now I would try ask some local guy or just hire a guide. But there is a tremendous amount of people , so there is no warranty of fresh lines, not even in inaccessible places.

This article was a completely first one from myself , so I hope that I did not offend anyone , and perhaps gave a little advice for those who are planning to ride at Verbier. We did not have a chance to ride more, unfortunately we missed the best lines or just did not know where to go. Until next time , we have learnt a lot and definitely tempting us to the next ride. It 's just about the snow !
