The basic safety equipment is in motion in the high snow-covered mountain , avalanche transceiver, snow shovel and probe. There no changes on these. If you wish for your safety do something extra, you can grab some extra widget. Today, there are three - backpack ABS, Avalung and Avalanche Ball. First mentioned has unambiguously  the best performance. Its creator is Peter Aschauer, which deals with its development for over twenty years.

Mr. Aschauer, how you thought that the large bag can keep skiers on the surface of an avalanche?

History of ABS-avalanche airbag starts curious. Because of my experience with "snow layers" put in the 70 years  some local verderer a patent of avalanche airbag. One times in winter he transported shot animal on  back. On the steep terrain in a strained dives he wals to save power sliding on snow. Several slipped, pulled while smaller avelanche but never was completely filled. Hi faught it was because he added volume of his body in the form of an animal ... After further experiments with balloons and tied big cans the idea avalanche airbag. First I have this question in collaboration with Research Center Alliance and later moved to Franhoferovým institute a system to the patent application. I obtained a patent in 1980. After the experiments based automotive airbag and development of carrier system, I could in 1985, together with Bavarian mountain service, to introduce the first fully functional ABS avalanche airbag. It happened at the winter ISPO in Munich.

How ABS backpack actually work in practice?

ABS airbag is a system that prevents the complete burialing of the avalanche. One pulling the handle on the starters pack in a few seconds, two airbags inflate the volume of 170 liters and the actual volume of the body increasing approximately 1.5 times. The rest is done by a simple physical law - if more particles moving at the same time, the largest float on the surface. The same happens in the fall of avalanches. Added volume of 170 liters of ABS backpack provides the necessary lift for a person to remain in a surface. Backpack must of course be firmly connected with the body skiers, which provide, inter alia, buckles and metal instead of plastic on the straps.

Why are the airbags just on the sides?
This principle ensures that the natural center of gravity of the body remains preserved and the whole body is stabilized. Avalanche victim floats on the surface of the masses of snow. The body is located closer to the surface of the avalanche, the less exhibited dynamic forces that operate in a surface. This significantly reduces the risk of injury.

Why are two bags?
Original ABS always consists of two airbags. They  blow up  at the same time, but thay have separate valves. If happen damage to one 85litrového airbag, the other still retains enough volume. Another reason is the unlimited mobility of the head with the inflated bags. In 200 incidents when has been activated ABS backpack, not even once a head injury. This is an argument for those who criticize ABS to protect the head. When using ABS avalanche rescue, such as preventive protection against another avalanche are restricted inflated collar over his head.
