Montafon-Voralberg

Montafone resort visited by Vojta&Igort

Insert: 08.01.2011
This resort is located on the west side of Austria, near the Swiss border and Davos. In the neighborhood of this resort there are also well known freeride areas such as Lech,   Zürs and  St.Anton. This resort is one of our favorite one to go. In last 2-3 years we have been discovering these areas over and over in order to find deeper and better pow. We keep coming back coz there is always a secret pow to ride.  This area is also known for the best snow conditions in the Western Alps.

It's 11 pm and we set out in a group of me Igor, Monica, Vojta. Firstly we went to Petrvald to pick up a power of attorney document in order to get a season ski passes issued on David and Martin. These tickets are valid for Golm, Gargellen, Montafon Silvretta-Nova, Silvretta-Nova Hochjoch, Muttersberg and Kristbergbahn resorts. After that we went straight in direction of Prague -Munich-Bludenz, Montafon.  Driving about 9 hours in a row of which 2 hours drove Vojta gave me taught moments. Anyway we made it and arrived at 8:20 in the morning. At 10:00 we were good to go so we were mapping and watching very  well-known places to shred. After a while we took our skies off and hiked to the top of the mountain, from which each of us chosen untouched line. This we repeated twice and certainly don´t regret that we were not sleeping the other night because that experience was just great – shredding about 20 cm of fresh snow. On the third run we're descending without prior examination and we suddenly appeared in the middle of forest ending huge cliffs.  After a while we found traverse and luckily escaped from there. That traverse went thru dense pine forest to the houses at the lower part section where cableway station in Shruns is.

Next day the weather was getting worse because of low visibility, fog, wind and snow in higher parts. Therefore, we decide to use the season pass and went to Gargellen. There we found out that upper parts are without snow thanks to high wind which blew away tha last snowflakes. We did that run one more time and in the afternoon we set out to the nearby Golm. Golm surprised us with very beautiful forests and steep slopes. We are excited and go up and down repeatedly.

Over the Christmas holidays, we unfortunately could not find any any accommodation. We had Moni with us and that is why we are using relatively distant accommodation of her uncle in Memmingen, Germany, which is located about 130km.This solution, is not ideal and hopefully next trip we spend much closer.

Last day the snow forecast was right and we're looking forward to the new powder. We decide to visit Silvretta Nova. Above is the new snow, which partly covered our last tracks, which were visible from the previous days. In the morning we discover some new runs just great. In the afternoon clime has changed to much warmer temperature so we moved into woods. There the snow was melting very fast also. I still did not want to say goodbye to the Montafon and at sunset we were shooting last photos. It's getting dark and the decision is, we're going down - home. On the way back we stop in the Bavarian town of Kempten, where we got a kebab and went to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere of Kempten.

Me and Vojta are leaving at 7 and I was driving all the way home. Vojta was preparing  for New Year's Eve party in a wooden cottage on Grün. So we arrived at 4 which as just fine. The three-day trip is evaluated as successful again we were lucky and we enjoyed fun, beautiful weather and powder. Arlberg has not disappointed us again.
