Jumping from the cliffs, ice cliffs, snow banks and many other natural forms, all these is freeriding consist of. But, how to do it? How to practice a look into the abyss many meters deep, when the rocks are all around? How to control fear of heights without any injury? How to test the body balance when jumping from heights? All this and much more can be trained on jumps to water. There is no question of jumping from towers at the pool where you are under the constant supervision of the lifeguard. We are talking about flooded quarries, which are several in Czech. Since I am from Moravia, I will provide tree my tested places for this kind of activity and few other tips where to go.

Svobodne Hermanice is situated in north Moravia, about 10 km from Opava (see MAP). This slate quarry is a paradise for divers. Very clean and generally colder water is ideal for visit in hot summer days. From jumper’s perspective there is not many options. There are basically about 5 points (rocks) from which you can jump and all of them are located in the rear (southern) part of the quarry. The highest point has more than 11 meters from small start-up options. The ideal start-up rock is located in the southern part of the quarry. The possibility of starting a height of about 6 meters is ideal for safe training. I would recommend taking shoes with you for jumping in quarry. Thanks to omnipresent sharp rocks the start-up and running is not painless. Furthermore, the impact from height can sometimes hurt your feet if you no longer have the jumping technique well done managed where you have to stretch your feet completely on impact to water.

Quarry in Olšovec village is located approximately 5 km from Hranice na Moravia (see MAP). This smaller slate quarry is what the possibility of jumping into the water much richer. Overall, nearly a one third of the quarry is suitable for jumping and the height of the rocks is very diverse. This place come and enjoys beginner and bunch of punks who hit backflips from every spot they see. There are 2 rocks with possibility of start-up run. One with a height about 10 meters and the second with the jump from the woods with a height around 13 meters. On the other rocks I should note there we need a lot of bounce to go over some distance in order to pass some rocks during the flight. Total experience.

Not so far from Hranice na Morave there is another quarry close to village Opatovice (see MAP). This quite bigger quarry has the worst come out exit from the water after the jump. On the other hand there are the highest cliffs about18m (total crazy). I advance I would like to say that so many people died of jumping to water in this quarry from this high rocks. Impact on the water is very strong. Otherwise, there are many options jumping to about 20% of the circumference of the quarry. There are easily accessible beach for swimming and a pleasant environment with warm water.

In conclusion I would like to mention Vykleky quarry (see MAP) with whom I have no personal experience, but it is said that it worth to visit. Anyway I cannot forget to mention the most famous quarry for cliff jumps which is quarry in Hrimezdice (see map). Here is taking place a competition at Cliff Diving - High Jump (see HERE). There are emerging stars such as our jumper Michal Novotny (Red Bull Cliff Diving Series) or a World champion Orlando Duque. If you have some good tips on jumping in quarries, please share it in the discussion below the article.
