Gulmarg, India by Valis
With the view of snow to India
As usual the beginning of January was dedicated to exams at school. After all those exams last preparation for this trip could start. After all everything was ok, we got visa, booked hotel and tickets. So in the end of January I and my cousin John boarded to a plane directed to Munich and then to Delhi. There we changed plane to Srinagar. But this plane stopped in Jammu and we didn´t know it. We got off the plane. Luckily the plane was waiting for us, unless the airport crew found us. Well it happens.
After we arrived we spent overnight in Srinagar. In the morning we had a car arranged which picked us and took us finally to Gulmarg. After arrival we checked the snow, but there was about one metr less snow than usual. Our accommodation was in hotel with small lodges.
Another morning we finally went to ski. We jumped on very old lift cabin lift brand Poma, which took us slowly up. We reached the divide station and waited for at a second base. There was about 50 other freeriders in a row. Finally we got to the top and could ski down. Firstly without hiking but then there was no other possibility than take out skins and hike up for a little. Another day was the same.
The third day we decided to ride other side of the mountain where weren´t much tracks. Unfortunately on the way down I fell down and stretched ligaments in my knee. I managed to hike back on the ridge but then the way down was horrible. What I did was that I sat on the skis and went down on my tushi.
Other four days the weather was bad. Honza hiked on skins. Usually the Monkey Hill, because of visibility you could see only in woods. Or when the lower lift was warking, he skied there. He also joined one guy from Australia, so they skied together.
Last two days, even if the weather was better, the high part of lift didn´t work. Previous days more than meter of snow fell down, so maybe this was the reason. So John skied again in the woods. He changed Australian guy for group from Czech.
And time to go home has come. Again we spent overnight in Srinagar. At least we had time to buy some presents and had an opportunity to visit carpet factory.
